Ed Mell was a student of the Arizona landscape, of the state's skies, mountains and figures. The acclaimed artist was born in Phoenix in 1942, graduated from LA's Art Center College of Design in 1967, then migrated east to New York City, where he became art director at a major advertising agency. But after six years in the big city, Mell ached for desert landscapes. He returned to Phoenix in 1973 and painted part-time while working in commercial art.

At Wickenburg’s Hassayampa Smokehouse BBQ, there’s a hierarchy of flavor superiority. At the top is the king of all barbecue cuts: brisket. “The brisket is absolutely the best item on the menu,” co-owner Michael Richey says. “It’s the item I worked the hardest on, and I’m very proud of how it’s come out. The Reuben is a close second, though. We smoke the corned beef in-house and have had amazing feedback about it.

When it comes to public lands, Alaska is the most privileged state in the union. With more than 325 million acres of state and federal jurisdiction, there’s an endless stream of recreational opportunities up there. At the other end of the spectrum is Delaware, which has less than a thousand acres. Somewhere in between is Arizona — we rank fourth, behind Alaska, Nevada and California.

So, it was no surprise when Smith (pictured) and Arroyo took down the tent early last year and moved into a vibrantly decorated brick-and-mortar restaurant at the Egyptian Motor Hotel on Grand Avenue. A few months later, Bon Appétit named Chilte one of its “24 Best New Restaurants of 2023.” For Smith and Arroyo, the accolades are meaningful. More importantly, they’re a testament to the power of community and to finding inspiration through the lens of global cuisine.
