The cream of the crop among north-east restaurants and chefs were celebrated at a prestigious awards ceremony in Aberdeen last night. Winners in six categories of the North East of Scotland Chef and Restaurant of the Year competition were unveiled at The Marcliffe Hotel. It followed an exciting cook-off, judged by some of Scotland’s top chefs, at North East Scotland College (Nescol). The restaurant of the year title went to The Udny Arms Hotel, near Newburgh.

Frustrated by the failure of technology projects, Aberdeen entrepreneur Colin Dawson was determined to do things differently. The 36-year-old launched digital consultancy firm Dax Group with his goal of bringing what he describes as his “secret sauce” to the market. Now, one year later, the business has achieved turnover of £1.2 million and secured a number of large contracts. Colin has described his journey so far as “chaos and carnage” but one that brings him excitement for what the future holds.

Aberdeenshire engineering boss Ray Milne left school at just 15 with no grand plan, only a curious mind and a knack for taking things apart to see how they worked. A natural problem-solver from a young age, Ray would spend hours dismantling gadgets and building computers in his teens. Now, nearly three decades later, he runs Legasea, a subsea engineering firm turning over close to £5 million and operating in 25 countries.

Around 80 guests gathered at The Marcliffe Hotel, for the drinks reception. The night kicked off with a welcome speech from Press & Journal editor Craig Walker followed by Steven McKay from cHeRries Awards title sponsor Mattioli Woods.
