Alabama is set to execute Carey Dale Grayson for the 1994 brutal slaying and mutilation of a hitchhiker in Jefferson County on Thursday evening, making it the state’s sixth execution in 2024. As of Thursday morning, 50-year-old Grayson was awaiting word from the U.S. Supreme Court, which he has asked to halt the execution. Grayson’s execution is to be carried out using the relatively new method of pumping nitrogen gas into a mask fitted over an inmate’s face and suffocating him to death.

A federal appeals court Monday afternoon rejected Alabama Death Row inmate Carey Dale Grayson’s request to stop his scheduled execution by nitrogen gas later this week. Grayson’s attorneys say they will appeal the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court. Grayson, 49, is set to die Nov. 21, within a 30-hour timeframe. He was convicted with three other men for the brutal Feb. 22, 1994, slaying and mutilation of Vicki Lynn DeBlieux.

Keith Edmund Gavin is set to be the third man Alabama executes this year when it conducts his planned lethal injection on Thursday night. The 64-year-old is set to die for the March 1998 murder of William “Bill” Clayton Jr. in Cherokee County. Clayton was gunned down near an ATM while getting cash to take his wife on a date that evening. Gavin’s execution is scheduled for 6 p.m., but could go into the early hours of Friday morning if a court battle ensues.

An Alabama inmate, in a handwritten motion early Wednesday evening, appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to block his lethal injection execution set for Thursday in the 1998 murder of a man at a bank ATM in Cherokee County. Keith Edmund Gavin, 64, filed the motion to justices just before 7 p.m. Wednesday seeking a stay of execution. He apparently filed the appeal without help from his lawyers. The motion centered around an appeal that Gavin filed earlier this summer in Cherokee County.
