A woman who worked at a school in Walker County was arrested in May after alleged sexual contact with a student. Ashley Nichole McCarty, 31, is charged with having sexual contact with a student under the age of 19. The incident allegedly happened in February 2024 at her home in Sumiton, according to court documents. McCarty was taken into custody on May 7. Her bond is posted at $30,000. Court documents do not say where McCarty was employed or provide any more details about the incident.

Birmingham is a contender to host the U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials in 2028. Gene Hallman, president of Eventive Sports in Birmingham, told AL.com that the city’s bid is one of four currently under consideration. The event would take place over several days in June 2028 ahead of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Hallman said he expects to hear a decision as soon as this summer. Trial locations are decided by the Olypics committee and the sport’s national organization, in this case, USA Gymnastics.

A Cullman teen driving a motorcyle died in a head-on crash with another vehicle June 18. The 18-year-old, who has not been identified by officials, was thrown from his motorcycle after colliding head-on with a pickup truck on Highway 278. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash happened at approximately 4:34 p.m. about 5 miles west of Cullman. Cullman resident Cody Still, 29, was driving the truck, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Affordable mattresses sold on Amazon are being recalled due to fire hazard. Crayan Mattresses, a Chinese mattress brand sold exclusively on Amazon, is recalling about 100,000 products that fail to meet flammability requirements. According to an alert from the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued June 18, the recalled mattresses don’t meet federal safety standards and can pose a “deadly fire hazard.”No injuries or incidents have been reported.
