Katie Collins’ teaching career started in her childhood bedroom, where as a young girl she’d spend hours instructing a room full of stuffed animals – and her little sister, Liz, too. Collins, a 20-year educator and first grade teacher at Bluff Park Elementary in Hoover, is this year’s recipient of Alabama’s prestigious Teacher of the Year award. She is one of two Birmingham-area educators to be named finalists for the state’s highest teaching honor.

During his tenure, Daria has earned numerous awards for his leadership, including being named the 2023 State Superintendent of the Year. He is also one of the state’s highest-earning school leaders; this year, Daria earned a salary of $283,774.

Alabama is increasing its state spending with higher education and general fund budgets, which Gov. Kay Ivey signed into law Monday. In an announcement Monday, Ivey praised lawmakers for increasing investments in literacy and numeracy efforts, as well as nearly doubling funding for the CHOOSE Act, a new program that gives families tax credits to spend on private education.

Some Alabama school districts could get hundreds of dollars more per student, totaling as much as $11 million in additional funding, to support high-needs students. Districts with lots of English language learners, such as Tarrant and Albertville, appear to be early winners in an effort to revamp the state’s school funding formula. But every district in the state would get additional funding.

Alabama’s $10 billion education budget won’t include raises for teachers this year, but lawmakers are covering a few new benefits for educators. State teachers will get paid parental leave and worker’s compensation for the first time. They also will not have to pay higher health insurance premiums. All in all, advocates say the package is a win for teachers.
