The two Modesto City Council incumbents running for re-election have raised five times more money than their three challengers in the Nov. 5 election. District 1 Councilwoman Rosa Escutia-Braaton has raised the most — $40,003 as of Friday, according to her campaign finance forms filed with the City Clerk’s Office. She is being challenged by transportation planner Joel Campos and former Councilman and guest teacher John Gunderson. He also is a former Stanislaus Union School District board member.

Modesto’s proposal to remake the Standiford Avenue-Highway 99 interchange is drawing objections from Vintage Faire Mall’s owner, which says the change would significantly harm the mall and the other shopping centers at one of the city’s busiest commercial centers. The city is working with Caltrans to drastically transform the traffic corridor with roundabouts and new roads, including ones on private property the city would acquire from the mall and nearby shopping areas.

Voters in northwest Modesto will choose among the incumbent, a transportation planner and a former councilman in the November election to represent them on the City Council and grapple with such issues as homelessness, housing and economic development. John Gunderson, 68, served on the council from 2011 to 2015 and this will be his third attempt since then to regain his council seat. He works as a guest teacher.
