    Over 200 new members from different political parties have joined the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the Mgayi area of Umzumbe Municipality on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. They were officially welcomed by IFP President Velenkosini Hlabisa, accompanied by local leaders.     The family of Chief Albert Luthuli says it’s still struggling to deal with his unresolved cause of death. The family’s statement comes after the Justice Department announced the reopening of the inquests into the deaths of Chief Luthuli and Griffiths Mxenge. Chief Luthuli, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former ANC president, was killed in a train crash in 1967. Mxenge, a prominent human rights lawyer, was murdered in Umlazi near Durban in 1981.

    One lane of the N3 at the foot of Van Reenen’s Pass has now been opened to traffic after a crash involving two trucks. All lanes had to be closed after the two vehicles caught alight following the crash at the foot of the pass in KwaZulu-Natal. One person died in the crash. KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Sindi Msimanga says the fires have been put out but the recovery process is still underway.

    There were mixed reactions by opposition parties over the province’s budget tabled in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature today. MEC for Finance, Francois Rodgers, presented the provincial budget of R158,8 billion. He said they had to acknowledge that historic budget cuts had put immense strain on the provincial fiscus.
