City of eThekwini ramps up rabies' vaccinations

A man from eZimbokodweni, south of Durban, has died after being bitten by an unvaccinated dog, that later showed signs of rabies. The eThekwini Municipality has in a statement said that the victim was bitten in March but only sought medical attention a couple months later. By that time, the virus had spread through the man’s body. The City says a similar incident occurred last year, where a three-year-old died after being in contact with a suspected rabid dog.
Hlabisa to deliver a eulogy at Petros Sithole’s funeral in Nkandla

Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) president Velenkosini Hlabisa will deliver the eulogy at the funeral service of IFP leader and member of Parliament Khethamabala Petros Sithole in Nkandla, northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday. Sithole was gunned down during a shooting at the Buyafuthi Hostel in Katlehong, Gauteng, last week. He was a member of the IFP’s National Council and served as the party’s Deputy Chief Whip in Parliament.
Apartheid cops continued harassment after Luthuli death, court hears

The Pietermaritzburg High Court has heard that harassment from the apartheid government’s security police after the death of African National Congress (ANC) leader Chief Albert Luthuli forced his family to go into exile in 1967. Luthuli’s granddaughter, Lindiwe Ngobese-Nxumalo, read a victim impact statement on behalf of Luthuli’s grandchildren at the reopened inquest into his death.
Prime suspect in Olorato Mongale murder killed in police shootout

The main suspect in the murder of Olorato Mongale has been shot and killed by police in KwaZulu-Natal. Philangenkosi Makhanya was found by the police in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban. It’s believed he shot at police, who returned fire. Makhanya, together with two other suspects, Fezile Ngubane and Bongani Mthimkhulu, were wanted in connection with Mongale’s murder. Mongale’s body was discovered near Alexandra township, in northern Johannesburg, last Sunday. Ngubane and Mthimkhulu are still on the run.
MK Party says plans afoot to take over control of KZN

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party is adamant that it will take the reins in KwaZulu-Natal in the coming months. Despite the party securing the greatest number of votes in KwaZulu-Natal in last year’s general elections, it failed to secure an outright majority. A grieving family in Phoenix, north of Durban wants answers after their daughter Phumla Mtshali was killed in a hit-and-run incident that occurred in the early hours of Friday morning. KwaZulu-Natal police have confirmed that the vehicle involved was attached to the SAPS Royal Protection Services. It was, however, reported stolen by the driver and found in a sugarcane plantation. Mtshali was walking along the Phoenix Highway.
