The main suspect in the murder of Olorato Mongale has been shot and killed by police in KwaZulu-Natal. Philangenkosi Makhanya was found by the police in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban. It’s believed he shot at police, who returned fire. Makhanya, together with two other suspects, Fezile Ngubane and Bongani Mthimkhulu, were wanted in connection with Mongale’s murder. Mongale’s body was discovered near Alexandra township, in northern Johannesburg, last Sunday. Ngubane and Mthimkhulu are still on the run.

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party is adamant that it will take the reins in KwaZulu-Natal in the coming months. Despite the party securing the greatest number of votes in KwaZulu-Natal in last year’s general elections, it failed to secure an outright majority. This forced it to become the official opposition when the IFP, the ANC, the DA and the NFP formed a government of provincial unity. Party leader Jacob Zuma addressed members in Durban.

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has opted to remain mum on the decision by the party’s national leadership to reconfigure the provincial structure. After months of speculation on the future of the ANC in the province following a dismal performance at the May polls, the National Executive Committee (NEC) announced its decision last week. But it’s yet to be decided how the provincial leadership will be restructured.

Rumours are rife that South Africa's iconic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit could be gearing up to host Formula 1 racing again. Kyalami hosted its first race in 1961 before it fell off the Formula 1 calendar in 1993, and Africa has not been a host to another race since then. South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, met with Formula 1 CEO, Stefano Domenicali, as well as FIA President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in September 2024.

Disaster management teams in KwaZulu-Natal are on high alert as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts a drop in temperatures in many parts of the country from Sunday to Tuesday. There is a possibility of snowfall in the Drakensberg area in the Harry Gwala District on Monday. A 60% chance of rain is also expected in the province.
