The reopened inquest into the death of human rights lawyer and African National Congress (ANC) activist, Griffiths Mxenge, has been postponed until the 9th of October at the High Court in Pietermaritzburg. The court has adjourned the inquest to allow implicated former police officers to get legal representation from the state. Mxenge was kidnapped in Umlazi in the south of Durban and murdered in 1981. The first inquest in 1982 found that his killers could not be identified.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli has expressed disappointment that the Thandukwazi Primary School in KwaMashu, in the north of Durban, still has damage dating back to the 2022 floods. The school is among about 200 that were damaged by strong winds, in the past week. The Premier’s visit to the school was aimed at assessing the extent of the damaged caused by the strong cold front that hit the province. The latest damage further disrupted teaching and learning in some of schools.

Parents have expressed concerns after some KwaZulu-Natal government schools sent out letters that the June exams have been postponed, and winter holiday schooling camps called off. This as members of teachers’ unions refuse to set or mark papers in their own time, in protest against the lack of funds at some schools to administer the exams. Teachers’ unions SADTU and NATU are blaming the provincial Department of Education for not paying schools their full subsidies.

Teaching and learning have been disrupted in some schools in KwaZulu-Natal due to damage caused by strong winds this week. Amongst the schools affected is Kwamadlala Primary School in Pietermaritzburg. The provincial Department of Education says they are assessing the amount of damage caused by the inclement weather conditions in the province.

The re-opened inquest into the death of former African National Congress (ANC) president Chief Albert Luthuli is set to resume in the High Court in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, this morning. The Luthuli family is seeking to overturn the findings of the original inquest, which concluded that his death was accidental. Chief Luthuli died in 1967 after allegedly being struck by a train in Groutville.
