Today is Democracy Day, when our newsroom at The Baltimore Banner — and news organizations across the country — are coming together to highlight the need to protect our free press to ensure a healthy democracy. Especially in an election year, there is no more important time to ensure people have access to trustworthy news to help them make informed decisions. Unfortunately, that is becoming more and more difficult because local journalism is under threat across the country.

That’s because many public agencies and court systems across Maryland had become lax — delaying responses to public records requests or ignoring them altogether, charging exorbitant fees for records, overaggressively redacting documents and denying access to courtroom hearings or public meetings.

In the wake of a worrying sale last week bringing the Sun under new ownership, other local outlets are stepping up and seeing support. The news organization best positioned to take on the mantle is The Baltimore Banner, the bustling nonprofit digital newsroom described from launch as the Sun’s crosstown rival.
