Research ArticleEVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGYINTRODUCTIONThe two extant clouded leopard species, Neofelis nebulosa and Neofelis diardi, are the closest living relatives to the five big cats of the genus Panthera, and, together, they form the subfamily Pantherinae (1, 2). Clouded leopards (Fig. 1A) are highly adapted to an arboreal lifestyle. They have broad paws, a long tail to maintain balance, and flexible ankles that can rotate nearly 180°, allowing them to descend trees headfirst (3).
