While Corbin Burnes’ stint with the Orioles was all too brief, it was long enough to leave a rooting interest. On Sunday afternoon, as Burnes cursed aloud and mouthed “my elbow” to his concerned teammates, plenty of Baltimoreans cursed with him. These days, it feels like even a minor tweak in an elbow eventually leads to a surgeon’s table and a long, arduous recovery.

When you spend half a billion dollars, you’d love to enjoy the investment as much as possible. Walking through M&T Bank Stadium while wearing a hard hat and dodging metal cables dangling from the ceiling, it’s easy to see where all the money’s going. But it also feels crazy that much of the new amenities — including ultra-elite club seating and field-level views — will be enjoyed only about 10 days a year. That’s why the Baltimore Ravens need to be thinking bigger when it comes to their calendar.

Just days ahead of one of the most anticipated basketball events in Baltimore in years, the biggest name will be forced to sit out. The Indiana Fever announced Monday that star guard Caitlin Clark will miss at least two weeks with a left quad strain, a huge absence for Wednesday’s game against the Washington Mystics at CFG Bank Arena. Clark, who is averaging 19 points and 9.3 assists for the 2-2 Fever, is one of the huge economic drivers of the WNBA, selling out arenas at many of her games.

It was around 9 o’clock Eastern on a night in April when Brenda Frese called her latest transfer portal target to pitch a whirlwind suggestion. Yarden Garzon, a three-year standout and the all-time 3-point leader at Indiana, had been talking with Frese on the phone and liked what she was hearing. So then, Maryland’s coach asked, Why don’t we get you on a visit to College Park? Could you fly out tomorrow morning? Garzon was game — but had an added request.
