A single-engine plane crashed in a residential area of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, on Saturday afternoon. The plane took off from Des Moines International Airport and was headed to an airport north of Minneapolis. There were no survivors of the crash, but the number of passengers is unknown. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.

Madison County Treasurer Amanda DeVos has been arrested for multiple charges pertaining to her role as treasurer. The Madison County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of DeVos, 37, Winterset resident and Madison County treasurer, in a Facebook post on Friday afternoon. She had been treasurer since 2023 after winning the 2022 general election with over 98% of the vote, according to official election results.

A Des Moines teen was found with a loaded gun on school grounds FridayA student at Des Moines Public Schools Central Campus was found to have a handgun on school grounds Friday after officers responded to a fight. The 17-year-old, whose name has not been released, allegedly instigated a fight, prompting officers to respond to the school, 1800 Grand Ave., around 1:20 p.m., according to a news release from the Des Moines Police Department.

A Des Moines Police dog helped locate more than 50 pounds of marijuana at the Des Moines International Airport on Thursday. Investigators at the Des Moines Police Department received an anonymous tip on Thursday that a large shipment of marijuana was on a Southwest Airlines flight from Las Vegas to Des Moines, according to a news release and court documents.

A Des Moines man who kidnapped a 73-year-old woman and forced her to withdraw cash from ATMs across central Iowa last June has pleaded guilty to all charges and faces a 20-year sentence. Robert Daniel Gonzales, 52, pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of second-degree robbery and one count of third-degree kidnapping after forcing his way into a 73-year-old woman's home and forcing her to withdraw cash from ATMs around the metro, including in Des Moines, Altoona, Ames and Boone in June 2024.

A baby boy is now in the care of the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under Iowa's Safe Haven Act. He will be placed with a foster family until he is adopted. The baby boy, born on Dec. 23, was the eighth safe haven baby of 2024, according to a news release from HHS. The seventh safe haven baby of 2024 was a baby girl born on Oct. 13. Ten babies were surrendered in 2023.

A Des Moines man was sentenced to 17 years in federal prison on Friday for distributing fentanyl that led to the death of a 1-year-old child. Kenneth Leroy Quinn, 23, sold pills containing fentanyl in April 2023 to a customer who brought the pills home. Their 1-year-old child died of acute fentanyl toxicity after ingesting the pills, according to a release from the United States Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Iowa.

A Des Moines man with a history of felony convictions including the vehicular homicide of an ex-girlfriend, was sentenced to 55 years in prison for kidnapping a different former girlfriend, among other charges. Troy Mure Jr., 33, pleaded guilty in court Friday to second-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary and being a felon in possession of a weapon in September 2024. He was also recorded to have tampered with a witness during the trial in December 2024.

The Des Moines Police Department has identified the officers who shot and killed a suspect inside his home on the southeast side of Des Moines during a confrontation Jan 2. Officers arrived at the home in the 2100 block of Meadow Court just before 5:30 p.m. on the second day of 2025 seeking to arrest a man, identified Friday as Charquan Mylick Hargrove, 32, who had felony warrants, according to a news release from Des Moines police spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek.
