But thanks to the federally funded Upward Bound program, students like Serenity Stokes are getting a head start on their higher education dreams. “Upward Bound is a federally funded, grant program. And we focus on pre-college students that have first generation, aspirations to go to college,” said Kim Biehl, an advisor for the program.

MADISON, Wis. — Madison Irish Fest is set to return this Friday, offering three days of music, food and fun across three venues in the area. Jeff Olson, a member of the headlining band Rising Gael. The band has been performing in the Madison area for more than 20 years, and Olson said he is excited to play for the local crowd. “Anytime we get to get up and play for our home crowd, home fans, it’s always exciting,” he said. Olson said the festival’s multi-venue format makes it unique.

MADISON, Wis. — The Black Girl Magic Conference returns to Madison on Thursday for its eighth year, bringing together more than 650 young Black girls for a day of empowerment, leadership and inspiration. Rosa Thompson, executive director of Black Girl Magic Educational Services, reflected on the event’s growth. “The Black Magic Conference started in 2018. It was just a way for our Black girls who participated in Black Girl Magic groups at their school just to come together,” Thompson said.
