Peru police officers train for the unthinkable

Peru Parkside School became a simulation Thursday for every parent’s worst nightmare. The school was turned into a mock mass casualty scenario with an active shooter holding a teacher hostage after shooting a school resource officer in the knee. Peru police officers along with a behavioral healthcare therapist from Arukah Institute of Healing participated in the training session to prepare for the potential of an active school shooting in a school.

The La Salle County Friends of Extension & 4-H will host a drive-thru fundraiser featuring Stone Jug BBQ at 4 p.m. Friday, May 9, in the La Salle County Extension Office parking lot, 1689 N. 31st Road in Ottawa. The fundraiser takes place from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Attendees can buy a pulled pork sandwich, cornbread, baked beans, cheesy hash browns and a cookie for $16. Tickets can be bought at the La Salle County Extension Office, Grand Ridge Bank and from committee members.
La Salle police department receives Easter surprise

La Salle Police Department received a surprise Easter treat on Friday — chocolate bunnies. Four-year-old Ryker Brown gifted the bunnies on Friday, according to the La Salle Police Department’s Facebook page. Chief Mike Smudzinski said it was a kind and thoughtful gesture. “Having a little boy show up and do something like this means the world to us,” he said. “We also want to thank the parents for encouraging it.”
Peru Pool committee shares preliminary drawings

The Peru Municipal Pool Committee released its first preliminary pool design on the Friends & Family for Peru Pool Facebook account on Thursday. The design, completed by Kmetz Architects, showcased a potential new pool next to the Splash Pad at Washington Park. “This design is not final,” the committee said. “It still has to be presented at a public meeting to the community and then maybe make changes and then presented to the City Council. So this is a step.
Registration opens for annual Carus Summer Science Camp

Rotary Park Foundation donates $5,000 to city of La Salle

The Rotary Park Foundation recently donated $5,000 to the city of La Salle. The funds will go toward reimbursing the city for the Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development Grant, a program administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. This was a matching grant for $800,000. Finance Director John Duncan said at Monday’s La Salle City Council meeting the foundation encouraged the city to apply for the grant, with the knowledge the city would be responsible for $400,000.
