Holiday light displays share magic of the season

I grew up in in Omaha, Nebraska, and like many communities across Wisconsin, our neighborhood decked the halls, trees, fences, roofs and yards for the holidays, rivaling but maybe not quite matching Candy Cane Lane. On those weekends before Christmas, traffic would back up as minivans crawled through the neighborhood to see elaborate displays of lights, garlands and holiday characters. One neighborhood dad dressed up as Santa and gave out treats to visitors.

Voting closes across the Appleton area for the 2024 general election at 8 p.m. when we wait for election results. Anyone who is in line to vote when the polls close can remain in line and still legally cast their ballots in Wisconsin's election. Wisconsin voters cast ballots for President of the United States, U.S. Senator, all U.S. Congressional seats and myriad Wisconsin state Senate and all Wisconsin state Assembly seats.

The Republican National Convention has come and gone, bringing with it celeb sightings, speeches upon speeches, protests, quiet streets and patriotic garb. Things started earlier than expected, with former President Donald Trump arriving in Milwaukee on Sunday, just a day after his attempted assassination at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The convention officially got underway Monday with Trump announcing JD Vance as his vice presidential running mate.

Next to large mausoleums, towering monuments and bronze-cast sculptures on Milwaukee’s south side, you’ll also notice many more humble markers: Mother, father, wife, daughter. Forest Home Cemetery and Arboretum is the final resting place of Milwaukee’s founders, pioneers, industrialists and beer barons, but it’s also home to soldiers, children, barbers and teachers. Towering oaks shade gravestones arranged seemingly haphazardly. It’s more of a park than a graveyard, and that was by design.
