SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — After winning multiple national championships, boxer and Syracuse native Amir Anderson has set his sights on gold, Olympic gold that is. Anderson could soon be on his way to Paris for the 2024 Olympic games. Every day of his childhood was spent training, but getting to the gym was half the battle. The path he had to take was not easy. Anderson shared with NewsChannel 9 that each day he had to walk past people on the street doing drugs and witness gang activities.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — State funds from settlements with pharmaceutical companies are going to programs to address the opioid epidemic. The $1.4 million of funding will focus on the prevention of overdose deaths, addiction treatment services and outreach within the city of Syracuse.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Synthetic marijuana often known as ‘Spike’ is raising concerns in Onondaga County. It may contain fentanyl and xylazine. Mariah Senecal-Reilly, the Director of Substance Use Initiatives with the Onondaga County Health Department says the county has heard a lot about the drug’s usage. “…People will seemingly pass out, still breathing, but relatively unresponsive to things in their environment and very shortly after, wake up and be totally fine,” she said.

New York State committing ten million dollars to expand these mental health services on SUNY campuses.
