Bedford’s MP has said he is ‘deeply disappointed’ over the decision to close Bedford’s 999 call centre – putting around 200 jobs at risk. Mohammad Yasin MP has been campaigning for the centre to remain open – but the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) has now confirmed it is set to close within the next two years. The trust says the decision was made to reduce the number of Emergency Operations Centres (EOCs) from three to two at a meeting on May 7.

A pub in Cardington is getting ready to reveal its transformation after an extensive refurbishment. The King's Arms is due to reopen just as the May bank holiday weekend gets under way – on Friday, May 23. The new look will blend the pub’s traditional charm with modern comforts – with a new bar area, plush upholstered booths and new outdoor furniture to make the most of the (hopefully) summer sun.

A children’s home in Biggleswade has been handed a ‘good’ Ofsted rating after a two-day inspection. Ofsted inspectors visited Maythorn children’s home on March 4 and 5 and found that it was good overall, and for how well children and young people are helped and protected. However, they also found that the effectiveness of leaders and managers requires improvement to be good. The home had previously been given good ratings in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2024.

A former teacher and pioneering cyclist have been honoured as the names of two new woodlands in Hatch have been revealed. Cope Spinney honours Poppy Cope – a teacher known for her environmental work and community spirit, while Bidlake Spring has been named in honour of Frederick Thomas Bidlake, a pioneering cyclist with strong ties to the area. Both names were chosen via a community vote.
