Anderson and his wife bought the vehicle with fewer than 5,000 miles on the odometer. Then they drove it, a lot. Their grandkids learned driving skills steering the van around a church parking lot.

The Monroe County Correctional Center has been overcrowded for nearly two decades, prompting a lawsuit from the ACLU of Indiana. Despite ongoing planning for a new jail, the current facility remains in use and continues to face overcrowding and maintenance issues. Sheriff Ruben Marte has implemented improvements to the existing jail, including sanitation, painting, and increased inmate programming.

The Bloomington Police Department's manpower shortage was greatly reduced this week when the city welcomed 11 new police officers. The officers — 10 men and one woman — were sworn in during a June 2 ceremony at Bloomington's city hall. One returned to the force from retirement and five are from other police agencies in the state: Indiana University PD, Indy Metro PD, South Bend PD, Lawrence County Sheriff's Office and Martin County Sheriff's Office.

A 59-year-old woman was found dead inside her car Sunday in Bloomington's Walmart parking lot. A Monroe County Sheriff's Office news release said she lived in the vehicle, and a bystander and firefighter who tried to render aid were bitten by dogs that were inside. Investigators said Rosemary Hawkins may have suffered a medical emergency at 8:20 a.m., when store surveillance camera footage showed her slow-moving vehicle striking a concrete light pole base in the parking lot at the Walmart on Ind.

A Bloomington man who is a former police officer is accused of forging insurance documents to make it appear his lawncare business was covered by using old policies from the private security business he oversees. Aaron D. Waltz, 46, vice president of operations at Bloomington-based Security Pro 24-7, owner of Aaron’s Lawncare and Maintenance and a former Ellettsville reserve police officer, is charged with two felony counts of counterfeiting.
