One thing I have learned over nearly 20 years working in the community, is that every faith group feels it is the most hard done by. There is no way to measure this, but the competitive victimhood in this space is one of its hallmark and less endearing characteristics. This is particularly the case when it comes to the relationship with Government and policy makers, where special pleading from individual communities runs riot.

After a gruelling and lengthy campaign, the Board of Deputies elected five talented trustees from across our community; younger and older, representing our regionality and diversity, but with one gaping gap – the g word… Gender. Phil Rosenberg, the new President ran a dynamic, exciting, visible campaign, the world of social media finally catching up with the hallowed, traditional image of the Board.

With the tragic conflict continuing to rage in Israel and Palestine, threatening to tear communities here in the UK apart, it has never been more important to bring people of different faiths and beliefs together to build understanding. However, in my 20 years of working in this space, I can safely say I have never seen such forceful efforts by people on different sides to willingly denigrate these initiatives quite so brazenly.
