Tes Jolly, co-owner of Jolly’s Outdoor Visions near Tuskegee, Ala., has received the 2024 Wade Bourne Lifetime Achievement Award in Outdoor Communications and Media. Official recognition will take place Aug. 17 during the Legends of the Outdoors Hall of Fame Banquet in Springfield, Mo.“This is an award that goes to outdoor writers and photographers who have helped spread the word across America about the value of hunting and fishing,” said Garry Mason, director of the hall of fame.

COLUMBUS — Mississippi University for Women’s volleyball team racked up another academic award this week, taking home the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s prestigious Team Academic Award for a fifth straight year. Academics is greatly valued in The W’s athletic department, and as a whole the school’s student-athletes posted a combined 3.26 grade point average for the Spring 2024 semester.

There’s an axiom in sports journalism that says, “The smaller the ball, the better the writing.” Debatable though that may be, I’ve found, to some extent, the same principle holds true with the size of game when it comes to outdoor writing. The smaller the game, the better the story, and stories of upland bird hunting, quail hunting in particular, stand out as some of my favorites of all time. Many elements of nature conspire to make the pursuit conducive to good writing.

OXFORD — Ole Miss star pitcher Hunter Elliott — the Tupelo native who helped lead the Rebels to the College World Series title in 2022 — announced Thursday on social media he will return for the 2025 season. Elliott was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 20th round of the MLB Draft earlier this month. The 6-foot-3 lefty pitched in just two games in 2023 and did not play in 2024 due to an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery.

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State women’s golf star Julia Lopez Ramirez was named the top amateur golfer in the world by World Amateur Golf Rankings, her first stay at the top of the rankings, and the first for any Bulldog. Lopez Ramirez has been a highly regarded golfer for several years now, and ranked inside the top three in the WAGR for much of her junior year, which saw her defeat the previous world no. 1, Ingrid Lindblad from LSU.

Growing up in Caledonia, Andy Finch was introduced to baseball around the ages of 5 or 6, when he started playing tee ball. He played baseball all throughout his youth and adolescence, graduating from Caledonia High School in 1998 and playing football and basketball as well. It wasn’t until he began teaching at West Point High School, though, that Finch discovered softball.
