ST PAUL, Minn. — A state panel recommends a man, who the Attorney General’s Conviction Review Unit (CRU) found was wrongly convicted of murder, be freed from prison. Brian Pippitt took his case for commutation to the Minnesota Clemency Review Board Friday. He and his lawyers argued the evidence the CRU detailed in its 2024 report overwhelmingly supports his innocence. By a vote of 6-1, the commissioners agreed.

ORONO, Minn. — Documents obtained by KARE 11 reveal two recent Minnesota scuba deaths came in the wake of weak regulations and lax enforcement of rules meant to protect divers. Since 2022, two young men have died — both during their first week on the job — pulling weeds from Minnesota lakes. Brady Aune and Joe Anderson's stories are strikingly similar. Neither had ever scuba-dived; received certified dive training; or had a key piece of equipment that might have saved his life.

MCGREGOR, Minn. — Brian Pippitt is still in prison, four months after the Minnesota Attorney General’s Conviction Review Unit (CRU) recommended his full exoneration in a 1998 murder case. His release has been delayed because the Aitkin County Attorney is challenging the CRU’s findings. The dispute has triggered a new legal battle about whether to free a 62-year-old man who has already served 23 years in prison for a murder he insists he did not commit.

MINNEAPOLIS — The 12-year-old boy walked into court, barely as tall as the deputy’s chin, and took his seat as adults argued about his fate. Accused of multiple car thefts since the age of 11, he has been found incompetent to stand trial due to mental health issues, his IQ and his young age. The boy’s court-appointed lawyer says under Minnesota law, he must be released.
