A former Grand Isle Council member and police officer has been convicted of molesting two girls dating back to the late 1980s. On Thursday, a Jefferson Parish jury found Elgene Gary Sr. guilty of three counts of sexual battery after deliberating for five hours, District Attorney Paul Connick Jr. said in a press release. Because Louisiana has more severe penalties for abuse of children under 13, two of the charges are related to one victim before and after her 13th birthday.

The west end of Veterans Memorial Boulevard is seeing a surge of new businesses, including Drew Brees' latest endeavor, called Surge Entertainment Center. The northwest corner of Lafreniere Park in Metairie is also now home to a revamped Tacos del Cartel, the new Pickle N Pins and a Chuck E. Cheese, among other restaurants and retail stores. And the new Rumba Caribbean restaurant opened a mile away this spring.

Three escaped inmates have been arrested and seven are still missing after an overnight jailbreak at the Orleans Justice Center, officials said at a late Friday press conference. New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick and Louisiana State Police Superintendent Col. Robert Hodges spoke to the media at 10 p.m. Friday, urging the public to continue to send in tips to Crimestoppers and the FBI, which are offering $2,000 and $5,000 rewards respectively.

Three inmates have now been arrested after a 10 men escaped the Orleans Justice Center early Friday morning. Dkenan Dennis was arrested on Dale Street in New Orleans East, according a source close to the investigation. He had been jailed on charges of armed robbery and illegal possession of weapons. Also Friday night, authorities arrested Robert Moody, 21, in Central City. This story will be updated with more information as it is available.
