Microwaves are a standard appliance in most kitchens nowadays, but it wasn’t always that way. The world’s first commercial microwave, the futuristically named Radarange, was invented by an engineer at Raytheon and hit the market in 1947. Standing nearly 6 feet tall, weighing more than 750 pounds and using about 3,000 watts of power, it was a beast of a machine that sold for between $2,000 and $3,000. The first model for residential use was introduced by Tappan Corp. in 1955.

The Michelin Guide announced Wednesday that it will debut its first North American regional guide. The American South edition, to be released later this year, will include Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and the pre-existing Atlanta guide. The rest of Georgia will not be considered for the guide. Travel South USA, the Atlanta-based destination marketing organization for the southern U.S., has partnered with Michelin to bring the guide to the South.

The James Beard Foundation announced the finalists for its 2025 restaurant and chef awards Wednesday afternoon, and Atlanta chefs and restaurateurs were largely shut out from the honors. The exception was Buckhead fine dining restaurant Aria, which made the finalist list for the nationwide Outstanding Hospitality award. The recognition is a final feather in the cap of chef and owner Gerry Klaskala, who announced his retirement last week after a 55-year career.
