The Salida High School girls' tennis team had a battle against the visiting Lady Danes of Fountain Valley April 22, which they lost 6-1. Coach Mike Mendicino said, “I knew that it would be a very close match.” The last two matches, No. 2 and 4 doubles, resulted in third set tie-breakers.

In back-to-back road games this week, the Salida High School girls’ soccer team tied Alamosa 1-1 April 21 and beat Vanguard 2-0 April 22. Against the Mean Moose, head coach Heidi Slaymaker said the team played okay in the first half. While they didn’t create a lot of chances, they also didn’t give up chances to their opponents, she said. In the second half, the Salida girls started combining passes and making more chances. Senior Izzy Hughes made six chances that went wide, Slaymaker recounted.

The Lady Spartan golf team placed third of 23 teams at their Pueblo West tournament April 21, hosted by the Lady Cyclones. Salida scored 263, just five strokes shy from placing first. Senior Kyndra Johnson took third with a score of 75, with two birdies and five bogeys. Johnson did come back saying her short game needed some work, however, coach Tami Smith reported. With 91, senior Kaelin Martellaro tied for 15th. Martellaro had a fantastic front nine, with bogeys and pars on the entire nine holes.

After some uncertainty in the middle innings, the Salida Spartan baseball team came back to blow the Sand Creek Scorpions away with a 14-6 win April 22 in Sand Creek. Coach James White said,“We were expecting a tough team. They’re a big 4A school.

In the last year of regionals, the Salida High School girls’ golf team hopes to keep the Denver area out of their region, coaches Tami Smith and Russ Johnson said, and with a more mature team, they hope to take a team of four to state. Smith is originally from Orem, Utah, but moved to Salida when she was 13. She played golf in Salida recreationally after high school and was self-taught. Johnson is from Liberty, Missouri, and has lived in Salida for 20 years.
