The Sterling Heights Lions Club’s second annual Paws for Service is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 8 — a free, family-friendly community event so that people can meet and learn about different types of service, therapy and working animals at the Sterling Heights Lions Club clubhouse at 12828 Canal Road. People will have a chance to interact with dogs and horses and take photos with puppies in training to be Leader Dogs for the Blind. Representatives from multiple agencies will be on hand.

On Memorial Day weekend — May 25-26 — many veterans are thinking about the comrades they lost either during deployments or since their service. A social media meme claims it is the most expensive holiday on the calendar, being about freedoms purchased by those who paid for them with their blood and their lives, and whose families and friends never “get over” missing them. The day is set aside to honor those servicemen and women. For many it’s a day off to launch summer fun.

May 17 is Armed Forces Day — observed on the third Saturday in May — a day to pay tribute to men and women currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The month begins with Loyalty Day and ends with Memorial Day. Vets raise money with poppies in between. Marie Gomez of Macomb is a member of American Legion Auxiliary, 7th District Association and local Unit 351. Her husband is a member of American Legion Post 351 in Utica, and their son Braygen is a member of the Sons of the American Legion.

All this month, the Eastpointe Lions Club and its charity, the Penrickton Center for Blind Children, invite patrons of Mike’s on the Water restaurant to tour its Snoopy Museum. Money collected from the museum’s three donation boxes during the month of May will be donated to Penrickton Center. “Mike (LeFevre) has a different charity for each month that the restaurant is open and we appreciate all he gives back to those in need,” Rhonda K.

High Tides & Good Vibes is the next fundraiser for the Mount Clemens Kiwanis Club. It is 6-9 p.m. May 15 at Tina’s Country House, 50870 North Avenue, Macomb Township. Tickets are $45 and include dinner, premium bar, music and raffles. The event is for patrons who are at least 21 years old. Laid-back island attire is encouraged.
