The James Coleman Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6802 has served its community for close to 80 years, and now the community is coming together to help the post. The vets would like to raise at least $15,000 to renovate their kitchen, a necessity at fish fry time to raise funds for the post and its community service projects. Those projects include support for veterans and local families in need, and scholarships for Richmond area students.

The Romeo Rotary Club, Kids Coalition Against Hunger, and the Four County Community Foundation hosted a meal-packaging event recently at Grace Lutheran Church in Bruce Township. “Each packet contains enough to provide a balanced, nutritious meal to six adults or 12 children,” Sharon Smith, Romeo Rotary Club president, said. “It’s a fun time, only takes a couple of hours, and is a great way to make new friends while also doing something very impactful,” Smith said.

Cody Conser-Quarterman, a third-grade student at Fraser’s Emerson Elementary School, received a donation from the Anchor Bay Rotary Club for a special section in the school’s library. The story was told in a newspaper earlier this year and seen by Rotary club president Laura Alfano. It said that Cody’s mother died when he was only five-years old but she had already inspired a love of reading in her son.
SERVICE CIRCUIT: Hospitality center at Detroit airport reaches milestone

The nonprofit Michigan Freedom Center Armed Forces Hospitality Center at Detroit Metro Airport that serves active duty, veterans, reservists, national guardsmen and NATO forces reached its one million milestone last month. The one millionth guest was Larry McKillop, a retired lieutenant colonel who served at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. He was on his way from Detroit to Denver at the time.

National Vietnam War Veterans Day is March 29. The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, a program that thanks and honors veterans of the Vietnam War, came about in 2008. The National Defense Authorization Act empowered the Secretary of Defense to conduct the program that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. The commemoration concludes on Veterans Day this year but the special day continues.

Aug. 27 might seem a long way off, but planning for the Shorewood Kiwanis Club’s Harper Charity Cruise for that day has been in the works for months. It starts with an art contest where Macomb Community College Design 3 winter semester students vie for the opportunity of designing the logo for the cruise T-shirts and other materials, and compete for cash prizes. The Shorewood Kiwanis Club of Michigan and major cruise sponsor Roy O’Brien Ford Inc. sponsor the contest.

Five librarians from Kazakhstan recently visited the Mount Clemens Rotary Club and the Rochester Rotary Club as part of the Rotary Open World Project. They were accompanied by one coordinator-interpreter, and a professional interpreter. The project is a Rotary International exchange of professionals meant to foster communication, technical expertise, and cultural experiences. RI’s ultimate goal is for peace to come to the world, and its programs work toward that.

World War II veterans Joe Sypniewski, 98, and Al Roland, 100, were recognized at the Michigan Home for Veterans Chesterfield on Feb. 25 by members of Detroit’s Chapter 9 of Vietnam Veterans of America. “We want to continue to lift up our veterans, thank them for their service, and honor individuals who went above and beyond for our country,” chapter president and Clinton Township resident Paul Palazzolo said.

The Quilts of Valor/Bay Area Quilters is a group of quilt-makers from the New Baltimore area dedicated to honoring veterans and active-duty service members with handmade personalized quilts. Crafted quilts are awarded, not gifted, as part of the national Quilts of Valor Foundation to show gratitude for veterans’ military service. About 400,000 have been awarded nationally to vets who also receive a Quilts of Valor certificate. The facts of the presentation are recorded by the foundation.

The Macomb Elks Lodge 2292 recently held its 2025 Law and Order Night, honoring firefighters and police officers. “We honor our first responders for their service to the communities that they serve,” Elks member Louis Johnston said. “With the tragedies that are seemingly occurring every week or so, it really points out how very valuable these firefighters and police officers are to our peace of mind.
