MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) -The University of Alabama annually hosts a Community Engagement Tour and Thursday they made a stop in York, Alabama. The tour gives the university faculty and students the opportunity to hear from citizens of West Alabama and the Alabama Black Belt. Its purpose is to support these communities by researching and implementing ways to address their needs. Sumter County is one of the only rural counties in the country with a hospital.
Detention Center Workers Treated to a Free Meal

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - This is National Corrections Officers & Employee Week and workers at Meridian’s Detention Facility were treated to free meals Wednesday. Earlier in the week, the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors issued a proclamation for the week and the Sheriff’s Department stepped up and provided a barbecue meal to the corrections officers. “Many times, in our community they are forgotten about,” said LCSD Chief Ward Calhoun. “They’re behind the big iron doors and tall walls.

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) -Sovereignty edged favorite Journalism to win the 151st Kentucky Derby. Sovereignty overcame a muddy racetrack before over 151,000 horse racing enthusiasts from around the globe at Churchill Downs in Louisville. The winning horse was ridden by Junior Alvarado. The Derby has always been run on the first Saturday of May since the first race in 1875. All this year’s horses are descendants of the greatest racehorse ever in Secretariat.
MCC Celebrates Major Project on Campus

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Meridian Community College marked a major milestone on campus with a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of a new sidewalk system. The project is designed to make the campus safer, more accessible, and more welcoming for students, staff and community. The new sidewalk winds around the entire MCC campus and features seating areas and updated lighting for evening use.
Sexual Assault Awareness Month

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) -April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and MCC partnered with the Wesley House to promote resources that are available in the area. For Denim Day, the Wesley House brought denim clothes that had statistics painted on them about sexual assault and abuse. Students were encouraged to take pamphlets that educate readers about consent and steps to take if you or someone you know has been assaulted.

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) -Ole Miss had eight players selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, the second most in school history. Rebel defensive tackle Walter Nolen was drafted 16th overall in the opening round by Arizona. Nolen played two years of high school football at Olive Branch before finishing school in Tennessee. Rebel quarterback Jaxson Dart went to the New York Giants as the 25th overall selection in the first round.

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) -I enjoyed time with my younger son and his wife in beautiful San Diego the last two weeks. One of the several highlights of the trip was seeing the San Diego Padres take on the Chicago Cubs last Wednesday afternoon at beautiful Petco Park. I thought maybe I would get to see Lucedale native Justin Steele pitch for the Cubs. Unfortunately for Steele, he had reconstructive elbow surgery last Friday and is out for the season. San Diego is an amazing place to visit.

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) -The Meridian Branch of the Mississippi Asthma and Allergy Clinic joined the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation Thursday. This clinic has been in Meridian for years providing allergy tests and treating seasonal allergies, asthma, food allergies, rashes, hives and more. They are excited to join the EMBDC as allergy season is in full swing. “We’ve been welcomed by the community from churches to schools,” said Stephen LeBlanc, a physician and allergist.
