Ivey issues weather state of emergency

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has issued a state of emergency for 37 Alabama counties ahead of this week’s winter weather. She’s encouraging Alabamians to make needed preparations ahead of the weather system, and avoid traveling in impacted areas unless necessary. The state of emergency went into effect Thursday afternoon and will remain in effect for the duration of the weather event.
New details on charges against mother of missing Fayette County baby

Disturbing details are being released about the final days of missing Fayette County baby’s life. The mother is charged in his death, and court documents show investigators believe she hid Kahleb Collins’ body earlier this year and helped dispose of it. Kahleb was discovered missing after a wreck on Dec. 8 that killed his 2-year-old sister and his father. Kahleb’s mother, 22-year-old Wendy Pamela Bailey, was also in the vehicle and seriously injured.

Ivey congratulates new class of correctional officers

Gov. Kay Ivey welcomed the latest class of correctional officers to the Governors Mansion Thursday. It’s the largest graduating class of her tenure. She offered her support and congratulations to the 96 graduates. The trainees completed ten weeks of training to obtain Alabama Peace Officers’ Standard and Training Commission certification. And the officers officially graduated Friday from the Alabama Criminal Justice Training Center in Selma.
West Alabama events to get you in the holiday spirit

Now that Thanksgiving is over, several Christmas events are happening in West Alabama over the next few weeks. Two events scheduled for Tuesday night. The city of Northport will host its Dickens Downtown Victorian-themed Christmas celebration from 5 to 8:30 p.m.And in Pickens County, the city of Reform will host its Sounds of Christmas parade Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.
New State Troopers sworn in and ready for service

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has 21 brand new graduates joining the State Trooper ranks. The 2024 State Trooper Class B graduation ceremony was held Thursday morning. Graduates of the program include 20 Highway Patrol Troopers and one Marine Patrol officer. The commencement ceremony was held at the Alabama Criminal Justice Training Center in Selma. Several of the law enforcements agency’s divisions had exhibits set up for attendees.
Demolition begins on the old Tuscaloosa News building, making room for the Saban Center

Demolition has begun on the former Tuscaloosa News building on Jack Warner Parkway across from Mercedes-Benz Amphitheater. The work is clearing the way for the new Saban Center. The Tuscaloosa City Council voted back in August on a demolition contract. That work is set to be finished early next year. City leaders said they expect to break ground on the Saban Center in April. It will be a unique STEM and the arts campus where education, experience and innovation meet.
Northport Police investigate shots fired Wednesday evening

The Northport Police Department is investigating a shooting that happened Wednesday evening. NPD Assistant Chief Keith Carpenter confirmed Thursday they responded to a call reporting shots fired about 6:30 p.m. at the Chevron on Bridge Avenue just off Fifth Street. Officers did not locate anyone injured when they arrived, Carpenter said, nor did they find any evidence of structure damage. But they did recover shell casings from the scene.
Carlee Russell back in court on false police report restitution

A Jefferson County woman who faked her disappearance last year in a story that garnered nationwide attention is back in court Wednesday. Carlee Russell called Hoover Police in July 2023, saying she was driving on Interstate 459, saw a lone toddler walking and pulled over to follow the child. When officers arrived, Russell was nowhere to be found, her phone and wallet left near her car.

John Edward Jones was last seen on Oct. 4 on Olivewood Rd. in Coker. He’s 5’9″ tall and weighs about 170 pounds. Anyone with information is asked to call the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s office at 205-752-0616.
