Pierceton Town Council Continues Discussions On Changing Speed Limits

PIERCETON – The Pierceton Town Council continued discussions on changing speed limits for a majority of the roads in town limits during its meeting Monday. Town Marshal Jim Bumbaugh requested all town roads stay at 25 mph speed limits, with the exception of a few roads changing to 30 mph. Those include the entirety of Market Street, Arnolt Drive, Pequignot Drive and Matchette Drive; and Mill Street, from U.S. 30 to Grant and Keith streets.

Jamasyn Virgil, who currently works as a Kosciusko County Jail corporal, was hired as a merit deputy. Board members described Virgil as enthusiastic about the job and said they were impressed by him.

ETNA GREEN — The Etna Green Town Council and residents discussed the aftermath of the Bourbon tornado and power restoration following the storm during a meeting Tuesday. Etna Township Fire Department Chief Kevin Smith II said the department assisted Bourbon with recovery efforts, including search and rescue, after an EF-1 tornado entered Bourbon during the night of April 2.

The city of Warsaw Code Enforcement requested a shipping container at Deluxe Inn be moved by Saturday, April 12. Deep Patel, a representative for Deluxe Inn, 2519 E. Center St., attended a code enforcement hearing on Tuesday to address the concern. He told city officials there had been two shipping containers on the property, with one belonging to the inn and another belonging to a Texas-based company.
Woman Receives Probation For Sexual Misconduct At Pierceton Woods Academy

A woman will serve one year on probation after having a romantic relationship with a resident at Pierceton Woods Academy. Dena Sue Patel, 52, North Judson, was charged with sexual misconduct by a service provider, a level 6 felony. Patel was sentenced in Kosciusko Superior Court I on Thursday. Kosciusko Superior Court I Judge Karin McGrath sentenced Patel to one year in the Kosciusko County Jail, with the entirety of the sentence suspended on probation.

Local attorney Steve Snyder, representing Murphy Place, Timothy Polk and Polk Family Farms, presented a petition to rezone 554 acres of farmland to an Industrial-3 district during the Wednesday meeting.

ETNA GREEN — Etna Green Town Council approved a quote from Steve's Roofing for a well building project in town during a meeting Tuesday. The town received three quotes for the project, ranging from approximately $7,000 to $22,000. Council President Heath Roberts said he spoke with all three companies that presented quotes and that each quote was for the same type of work.

CLAYPOOL — Claypool Town Council is working on addressing an issue with Section Street by seeking quotes for excavation work. During a Tuesday council meeting, Council President Benny Stage Jr. said the street's settling is a driving hazard. He noted there had been a lot of back-and-forth over the years on whether the part needing work was town or county property. Both entities have ruled it's town property, leading Stage to seek excavation quotes to fix it.

SIDNEY — Sidney Town Council discussed its contract with the Pierceton Police Department during a meeting on Monday. Pierceton Police Department emailed a January patrol report to Clerk-Treasurer Lisa Parrett. Council member Sharon Rancourt asked if Pierceton Police Department was making any stops in the Sidney area. Parrett said Pierceton Police Department didn't provide that information in their reports, but that she had witnessed them making stops.

Kosciusko County Sheriff's Merit Board approved a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for merit officers' pensions during a meeting Thursday. Board member Alan Alderfer said the COLA would be for future and prior retirees, and widows. "We've done our due diligence and talked with multiple people about this," Alderfer said. Kosciusko County Sheriff Jim Smith said the topic will also be presented to the county council and commissioners.
