The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has said the number-of-out of school children at primary school level in Nigeria has reached 10.2 million with 16 percent from the North West. The Chief of UNICEF Field Office Kano, Rahama Farah, disclosed this yesterday while commemorating the 2025 International Day of Education (IDE) in Kano. He said based on the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS 2021) report, 16 percent of this number are from Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states.

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has launched the second phase of the women empowerment initiative under the Livestock Fattening Programme of the Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP). A set of 390 Nigerian migrants stranded in Niamey, Niger Republic have been repatriated back to the country. The returnees comprising 387adult males, two adult females, and one infant boy arrived at the Nigeria Immigration Training school, Kano at about 1:05a.m on Tuesday. LEADERSHIP had reported that in December 2024, a set of 702 stranded Nigerian were returned back to the country from Niger Republic.

The Kano State children took over the Kano State House of Assembly for one and a half hours to celebrate International Children’s Day and call for improved school security. The children, selected from different schools across the state, represented the 40 house members, presided over by the speaker, 15-year-old Mohammed Isa. Following the recent disclosure by the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) that 83 cases of polio (cVPV2) were recorded across 14 states in the country, some northern states have stepped up the fight against the childhood disease. The agency said 64 of the 83 cases were Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) while 19 were found in Environmental Sites (ES).

Healthcare services at the grassroots have received a boost as the federal and state governments kicked off the revival of 17,000 primary healthcare centres (PHCs) across the country. The coordinating minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Ali Pate, had disclosed during the ministerial sectoral briefing to mark President Bola Tinubu’s one year in office that N260 billion was available at the state level for the revitalisation of primary healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the country.
