A tragic fire in Kaura Namoda local government area of Zamfara State has claimed the lives of 17 Almajiri (Qur’anic school pupils) and left 16 others critically injured. It was reported that the fire, which began around 2 am on Wednesday, was caused by burning corn stalks. The fire destroyed the shelter where the Almajiri pupils were sleeping.

Property worth billions of naira have been lost by traders in 13 fire incidents which occurred in six states of the federation. The infernos occurred in the states, except Zamfara, between September 2024 and January 2025. An investigation by LEADERSHIP Sunday showed that Kwara State topped the chart with five cases, followed by Plateau, Enugu and Nasarawa States, with two incidents each. Zamfara and Sokoto States recorded one outbreak each.

The Zamfara state chapter of the All Progressive Congress APC, has challenged the 2025 budget proposal presented to the state Assembly on Wednesday by Governor Dauda Lawal, saying it was illegal. The APC state publicity secretary, Yusuf Idris Gusau, in a statement, said the APC in the state was shocked by the high level of disregard to the nation’s constitution displayed by governor Dauda Lawal, his executive and the state legislature in the presentation and receipt of the 2025 budget proposal.

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has presented N545, 014,575,000.00 as the 2025 budget estimate, covering both recurrent and capital expenditures to the State House of Assembly. Governor Lawal informed the lawmakers that the recurrent expenditure in the budget amounted to N151,680,000,000.00, which is the 28 per cent of the total expenditure, which would essentially cover personnel costs, including the N70,000 minimum wage increment, pensions, gratuities, and provision for new employees.

No fewer than 12 persons were killed as bandits on Wednesday planted an explosive around Mai Lamba area along Dansadau-Gusau Road in Maru local government area of Zamfara State. LEADERSHIP gathered that a Gulf Wagon car conveying about 11 passengers from Gusau to Dansadau drove on the explosive device, which exploded and killed the driver and other occupants of the vehicle on the spot.

At least 12 people were reported dead on Wednesday morning following an explosion caused by bandits on a bridge in Zamfara State. The victims were travelling in an overloaded Golf car en route to Gusau from the Maru Local Government Area when the blast occurred at about 8am at Gadar Mailamba, also known as the Mailamba Bridge, in the Tashar Sahabi region of Maru LGA.
