Georgetown men’s basketball (12-5, 3-3 BIG EAST) lost to the St. John’s Red Storm (15-3, 6-1 BIG EAST) 63-58 on Jan. 14 at Madison Square Garden. In one of the Hoyas’ last chances to pick up a marquee win, they once again could not hang on to a double-digit lead, turning the ball over 19 times as a team. In a game that both teams needed to perform well in, each side gave their best punch. For Georgetown, it represented a chance to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive and avoid a three-game skid.

Darnell Haney, head coach of Georgetown women’s basketball, is about putting in the work, even when no one is watching. Haney spent five years as an assistant coach at Jacksonville and five years as their head coach before getting the call from Tasha Butts to join her staff at Georgetown in the spring of 2023. On March 21, Georgetown women’s basketball (23-11, 9-9 BIG EAST) beat the Washington Huskies (16-15, 6-12 Pac-12) 62-56 on Thursday night in the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT). By winning, Georgetown advanced to the next round of the WBIT, a newly inaugurated invitational tournament for teams that did not make it to the NCAA Tournament. On Wednesday, Georgetown announced that Darnell Haney would become the head coach of Georgetown women’s basketball.

This article has to start with a disclaimer: there are no moral victories in basketball. Or at least, there aren’t any included in the official count. The box score doesn’t show heart, or toughness. Togetherness and comradery don’t get teams trophies, or rings. Georgetown women’s basketball didn’t win the BIG EAST championship on March 11. They lost to the University of Connecticut instead, with a final score of 78-42. They didn’t go home with anything tangible.

On March 7-9, the Georgetown University track and field team traveled to Boston to compete in the NCAA DI Indoor Track and Field National Championships. Ed Cooley’s Georgetown Hoyas (9-20, 2-16 BIG EAST) crashed and burned in the second half against the visiting Xavier Musketeers (15-14, 9-9 BIG EAST) on Saturday night, giving up a total 48 points in the paint and 34 from the line and blowing a 12-point halftime lead 98-93. After a first half that saw the Hoyas hit eight threes to take a surprising double-digit lead going into the locker room, Cooley’s men came back out without a defensive gameplan, and quickly got punished for it.

On Feb. 27, Georgetown men’s basketball (9-19, 2-15 BIG EAST) lost in blowout fashion to the Villanova Wildcats (16-12, 9-8 BIG EAST), 75-47. In a season filled with blowout losses, this was one of the worst as the Wildcats sank three-pointer after three-pointer while Georgetown shot under 30% from the field. Put frankly, the Hoyas did not look like they belonged on the same court with one of the worst-performing Villanova teams of the last two decades.
