On Nov. 16, Georgetown men’s basketball (2–1, BIG EAST) could’ve built a village with all the bricks they laid on the rim as they lost in blowout fashion to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (3–0, ACC), 84–63, in a game coach Ed Cooley’s squad will want to forget in short order. The game started out back and forth as both teams played through their frontcourt on offense, with all four starters getting in the scoring column in the games opening minutes.

Georgetown women’s basketball looks to alley-oop off its impressive performance last season. Not only did the Hoyas improve from 14-17 to 19-10 (9-9 in the BIG EAST), but their season culminated with the program’s first appearance in the BIG EAST championship final and a second round appearance in the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament. After the tragic death of coach Tasha Butts, Darnell Haney took over as interim coach for the 2023 campaign.

On October 23, the Voice attended BIG EAST Media Day at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Here are quick highlights from the day, featuring Georgetown head coaches and players: BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman began the day’s events with a short introduction. Ackerman celebrated the 45-year anniversary of BIG EAST Men’s Basketball, but she emphasized the difficult journey the league has taken to become an elite basketball conference.

The writing was on the wall: it was time for a fresh start. With four straight losing seasons in the rearview mirror, Georgetown turned to first-time head coach Tasha Butts, seeking a new coach who could rewrite the script for the struggling Hoyas. In her short time on the Hilltop, she exceeded all external expectations. Butts brought in the sort of gritty, determined mentality characteristic of her own collegiate coach, the legendary Pat Summit.

On March 21, Georgetown women’s basketball (23-11, 9-9 BIG EAST) beat the Washington Huskies (16-15, 6-12 Pac-12) 62-56 on Thursday night in the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT). By winning, Georgetown advanced to the next round of the WBIT, a newly inaugurated invitational tournament for teams that did not make it to the NCAA Tournament. On Wednesday, Georgetown announced that Darnell Haney would become the head coach of Georgetown women’s basketball.

This article has to start with a disclaimer: there are no moral victories in basketball. Or at least, there aren’t any included in the official count. The box score doesn’t show heart, or toughness. Togetherness and comradery don’t get teams trophies, or rings. Georgetown women’s basketball didn’t win the BIG EAST championship on March 11. They lost to the University of Connecticut instead, with a final score of 78-42. They didn’t go home with anything tangible.

On March 7-9, the Georgetown University track and field team traveled to Boston to compete in the NCAA DI Indoor Track and Field National Championships. The Hoyas sent 8 individual runners to compete – 6 men and 2 women. Results and analysis for all their races are below. On Saturday, March 9, the Georgetown women’s basketball team (21-10, 9-9 BIG EAST) upset the St. John’s Red Storm (17-14, 11-7 BIG EAST) to advance to the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals. The Hoyas were led by graduate forward Graceann Bennett, who had 16 points and 7 rebounds. The game opened just about perfectly for the Hoyas, with shots falling nicely and their defense holding St. John’s scoreless in the opening minutes.

To nobody’s surprise, the Georgetown Hoyas (16-10, 6-9 BIG EAST) fell to the No.15 Connecticut Huskies (22-5, 14-0 BIG EAST) 85-44 on Friday, Feb. 16. Georgetown was led on the offensive end by sophomore guard Victoria Rivera, who scored 16 points on 6-14 shooting. UConn was led by the duo of senior forward Aaliyah Edwards and redshirt junior guard Paige Bueckers, who scored 26 and 21 respectively. At the very beginning of the game, Georgetown was able to hold their own.

On Sunday, February 4, the Georgetown Hoyas (15-7, 5-6 BIG EAST) took down the DePaul Blue Demons (11-13, 3-8 BIG EAST) in a close, low-scoring contest, 44-42. The Hoyas were led by the veteran duo of graduate forwards Graceann Bennett and Mya Bembry, who both put up 12-point double-doubles. Though shots weren’t really falling for Georgetown, the Hoyas’ defense and steady post presence made it difficult for DePaul to get anything going early either.
