Tributes are flowing for a Queensland toddler who was allegedly stabbed to death by her mother. Three-year-old Sophia Rose was described as a "beautiful little girl … always dressed in these beautiful dresses and bows in her hair" by her pastor, Joey Ryan. Sophia's mother Lauren Ingrid Flanigan, 32, has been charged with murder after the girl was found unresponsive at a home in Moore Park Beach, north of Bundaberg, just before 5pm on Monday.

Flooding has ravaged an area double the size of Victoria in outback Queensland and more rain is expected to fall. Residents in Thargomindah spent the night in their vehicles at the airport as floodwater spread throughout the town. There are fears the Bulloo River is yet to peak. "They now think there's 300 millimetres of water all through the town," acting Bulloo Shire chief executive Tamie Warner said.

Flood warnings remain in place for large parts of Queensland after widespread rain over the weekend with the weather bureau forecasting more falls to come. A severe thunderstorm warning is expected to be issued Monday for coastal and inland communities from Rockhampton north to Cairns. Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jonathan How said the area saw scattered falls between 50 to 100 millimetres on Sunday, which may continue throughout Monday.

An investigation is underway into a feral cat population threatening native wildlife on K'gari, Queensland's World Heritage-protected island. Park rangers and traditional owners are working to determine how prolific the cat numbers are on the world's largest sand island, which is an ecological sanctuary ripe with diverse plants and animals. "Based on observations … we definitely look to have a high abundance of cats," senior wildlife ranger Linda Behrendorff said.
