Two casinos in northern Australia found at high risk of being used for money laundering have been ordered to undertake an external audit. Financial crimes watchdog AUSTRAC said the Ville Resort-Casino in Townsville and Mindil Beach Casino Resort in Darwin were at heightened risk for financial crime. The watchdog identified "potential gaps and deficiencies" in the operators' anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing controls, risks and oversight.

A man has died after a serious crash on the Bruce Highway in Far North Queensland involving a car and a truck. Emergency services were called to the highway at Rungoo, north of Ingham, at about 12:45pm on Sunday afternoon. Initial reports indicate a grey Holden sedan and a Scania G450 prime mover collided. The driver of the car was declared dead at the scene. Paramedics say the truck driver, a man in his 50s from Kullogum, was treated for a knee injury.

Flooding has ravaged an area double the size of Victoria in outback Queensland and more rain is expected to fall. Residents in Thargomindah spent the night in their vehicles at the airport as floodwater spread throughout the town. There are fears the Bulloo River is yet to peak. "They now think there's 300 millimetres of water all through the town," acting Bulloo Shire chief executive Tamie Warner said.

The worst of the rain has moved offshore but scattered showers are persisting across Queensland as flood recovery efforts continue. As floodwaters recede a heatwave warning has been issued for the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands as well as the Channel Country. Senior forecaster Felim Hanniffy said rainfall was easing in flood-affected areas. "Certainly for Cairns and Townsville … the weather in comparison to recent days and shower activity is a lot more isolated," he said.

Some Queenslanders can expect heatwave conditions to ease over the Australia Day long weekend after severe storms battered parts of the state overnight. Parts of the state have sweltered through extreme heat this week. On Friday temperatures soared to 45.5 degrees Celsius degrees in Longreach and 44C in Winton. On Thursday a storm ripped through Kaimkillenbun, north-west of Toowoomba, while severe weather impacted parts of south-east and central Queensland on Friday afternoon.
