If the deal-making ahead of the opening of this year's event is any indication, the 2024 Frankfurt Book Fair is going to be a busy one. Among the deals announced was Scribner editor Rebekah Jett's acquisition of North American rights, in a six-figure preempt, to Portia Elan’s debut novel Homebound, from Julie Barer of the Book Group.

London-based independent publisher Oneworld was founded in 1986 by wife-and-husband team Juliet Mabey and Novin Doostdar. Their initial focus was nonfiction—they wanted to get academics to write for a general audience. “In the 1980s, that was very uncommon,” Mabey explains. “Now there are agents in both the U.K. and the U.S. who specialize in signing academics.
