At this summer’s Paris Olympics, there was a host of female athletic talent on display to inspire the next generation. However, while role models are not in short supply, the infrastructure, support and confidence young girls need in order to be active are still sadly lacking. According to research, 64 percent of girls drop out of sport before they turn 16, and 55 percent of girls aged 13-16 aren’t hitting the government’s daily activity guidelines.

Whenever a person asks for book recommendations on a running-related Facebook group they are met with a barrage of suggestions. But the vast majority of these books are written by men, and tell the stories of male runners. Many of these books are fantastic (anything by Adharanand Finn or Dean Karnazes) but they are only representing half of the picture. In recent years I’ve made a deliberate effort to seek out running books about women, written by women. And I haven’t been disappointed.

If you are evangelical about running and want to help others learn to love it as much as you do, have you considered becoming a running coach? Why should I become a running coach? By gaining some extra knowledge and expertise, you could support more people on their running journeys, whether that is helping them to get started, or guiding them to a PB. It could even set you on a new career path as you connect with more people who want to find a running coach. This was the case for Jennifer Lee.

It is a great beginner training plan, simple to follow, and has helped millions who thought they couldn’t run to become runners. The plan involves using the walk/run method three times a week for nine weeks.
