A hotel on the Preston and South Ribble border will become temporary accommodation for former Afghan military veterans who supported British forces, Blog Preston has learned. The Tickled Trout, on Preston New Road close to the M6 at Junction 31 on the outskirts of the city, but falling under the jurisdiction of South Ribble Borough Council, is therefore not available for bookings for events or stays beyond this coming weekend.

There are delays on the rail network due to problems with overhead wires between Preston and Lancaster. The disruption started earlier this morning (29 May) and is affecting Avanti West Coast trains between Scotland, Preston and London Euston. Northern services between Manchester Airport and Cumbria, Liverpool Lime Street and Blackpool North and Preston and Blackpool South are affected.

A body pulled from Preston Docks is believed to be a missing young man from Fulwood, police have said. Police were seen searching the area yesterday (28 May) after issuing an appeal regarding his whereabouts on Tuesday (27 May). They have now confirmed that officers found a body in the water and that they believe that body to be missing Connor Hanson who was 22.

An official drought has been declared in the North West despite high levels of rainfall over the last seven days. The region went into drought status on 21 May due to unusually low levels in reservoirs in the region, which currently sit at 59% full compared to the average of 85% in an average year. The drought status will be under review with higher levels of rainfall expected to continue in June.

A new cutting-edge radiotherapy machine is expected at Royal Preston Hospital as part of £70m of government investment. The machines, aimed at speeding up cancer treatment, will be rolled out to 28 hospital trusts with Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on the government’s list. While the location is unconfirmed, the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals radiotherapy department is located at the Rosemere Cancer Centre at Royal Preston Hospital.
