To achieve its goal, the Diocese is selling property and merging or closing parishes and schools, among other things. The Diocese faces other challenges: fewer priests, contributions, and parishioners.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A group of devout Catholics believes the Bishop of Buffalo has disengaged with the flock while he navigates through bankruptcy. In April, the five Catholics asked the Vatican to act. The Catholics, led by local attorney Mike Taheri, sent an April 8 letter to Pope Francis and the Apostolic Nuncio asking for the removal of Buffalo’s Bishop Michael Fisher. “Our Diocese needs a Bishop who is merciful and walks with his flock in good times and bad,” the group wrote.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Mark Carey lost at every turn to keep his deceased father’s Buffalo home in the family. After all, that was Ronald Carey’s wish before his death in 2015. Initially, paying the mortgage held by First Niagara was smooth. The bank had no issue with Mark taking over payments as an heir of the estate. But that all changed in 2016 when KeyBank acquired First Niagara. “They wouldn’t take payments from me,” Mark said.

A Buffalo mother of three children sometimes spent upwards of $900 a week for Uber rides to kids’ events, the laundromat, college, and work, when police seized her only car and held it for nine months, even though she was never charged with a crime. In another case, a local business owner had his two work vehicles seized, and ultimately had to shutter his business. He, too, was never charged. In a third case, a man shot in a chaotic incident dropped his phone while getting away.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The City of Buffalo has delayed a possible trial for two years by appealing to the 2nd Circuit to reintroduce several city police officers’ qualified immunity for striking a man with a cop car and roughing up his son. But the 2nd Circuit last week denied the appeals in the civil rights cases filed by James Kistner and his son Earl. The circuit judges stated it did not have the jurisdiction for either case, because it is the jury’s role to decide matters of fact in dispute.

Churches are closing or being merged. Catholic schools are running out of money. Fewer Catholics are turning to priesthood. As a result, there are fewer than 110 priests for the 160 parishes.

Correctional facilities have become the largest providers of mental health services in the country, and the Erie County Sheriff’s Office is no stranger to this shift away from sending the seriously mentally ill to psychiatric institutions. The sheriff’s office said about 60% of inmates are treated for some type of mental illness, which is above the national average.
