Heavy rain is expected to drench parts of Queensland today, but residents are warned a cold snap is on the way. A trough that was supposed to deliver showers and thunderstorms yesterday arrived 24 hours late and is forecast to dump up to 30 millimetres of rain along the coast. A pulse of easterly swell has brought days of large waves to the south-east. Surfers have been enjoying the conditions, and the swell has helped to replenish the sand banks and beaches carved away by Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

There are 400 kilometres of canals on the Gold Coast – more than in Venice or Amsterdam – and thousands of residents living along them are expected to face the brunt of Tropical Cyclone Alfred. In a worst-case scenario, City of Gold Coast modelling suggests the potential flooding and storm surge could impact more than 6,000 properties across the city. "They're talking about a storm surge of up to about 500 millimetres," Runaway Bay resident John Hart said.

A man who allegedly sedated his stepfather and left him to die, keeping his rotting corpse in his bed for more than a year, has been committed to stand trial for his murder. Police discovered the mummified remains of 69-year-old Tomislav Nemes at the family's waterfront Gold Coast home after they were called by interstate relatives to conduct a welfare check in April 2023.

A suspect is at large after a man was shot with a homemade pipe gun on the Gold Coast. Emergency services were called to Tallebudgera Creek Road in Tallebudgera Valley at midday on Thursday after reports of a shooting. A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said the man was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition. They said he suffered minor head and shoulder injuries after reportedly being struck by a projectile fired from a homemade pipe gun.

A man who died outside a Gold Coast pub was allegedly stabbed because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, a court has heard. Dylan McPadden, 26, was on the phone with his girlfriend when he was allegedly stabbed through the heart in the smoking area of RQ's Tavern at Robina in August 2023. Tyler Rewi Malcolm Hailes has been ordered to stand trial over his death, charged with murder.
