Olympic swimmer Summer McIntosh smashed a world record at Sannich Commonwealth Place Saturday night as swimmers from across the country compete at the Canadian Time Trials. The 18-year-old finished the 400 metre freestyle in three minutes, 54.18 seconds, beating other swimmers in the race by more than 13 seconds. “Going into tonight, I knew that my training has been really, really strong these past couple of months, and I knew I was able to do something special,” McIntosh said.

Residents in Sooke gathered to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the district’s incorporation as a municipality on Saturday. The community celebrated the milestone at Woodside Farm with cupcakes, kids being able to pet animals like goats and donkeys, and hay rides through the farmland. “Just celebrate what a great place Sooke is,” Maja Tait, District of Sooke mayor, said. Tait said while the municipality is only 25 years-old, the district has a vast history.

The Hudson’s Bay Company will be closing its doors across Canada Sunday evening, with many calling it the end of an era. The 355-year-old company wrapped up its liquidation sale this weekend as it goes through bankruptcy proceedings. On Sunday, many shoppers at Mayfair Shopping Centre wanted to take one last look at the department store. “I just wanted to walk through the store one last time,” Joy Kolsun told CHEK News.

The Victoria Horseshoe Club has a lot to celebrate, with the club reaching its 90-year mark and one of its members possibly holding a world record. On Saturday, the club hosted a big celebration at its horseshoe pitch in Saanich to celebrate the club’s 90th anniversary. The event included performances, speakers, a barbeque and a chance for newcomers to try their luck tossing some horseshoes.

Students from across southern Vancouver Island spent Wednesday at Saanich’s Cadboro-Gyro Park sharing mutual experiences and making friends. This was part of the Greater Victoria School District’s (SD 61) annual beach day for students who experience hearing loss. About 150 children, their families, teachers, and community resource experts from across the South Island participated.
