A crowd packed Wheelock Bandstand at Carlisle Barracks Wednesday morning for the arrival of U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. ACDC's "Thunderstruck" boomed over the speakers as Hegseth took the podium before U.S. Army War College students, families, faculty and staff. According to officials, he is the first Department of Defense secretary to visit the Army War College since 2009.

The Big Spring School Board selected Melissa Bigler to fill a vacancy during its meeting Tuesday night, despite an agenda item recommending a different candidate. Six board members chose Bigler to represent Newville Borough, while Board President John Wardle and board member Frank Myers voted for Alison Mellott. Tuesday night's agenda included a recommendation to appoint Mellott, who was the sole applicant for the seat until Tuesday morning.

If all goes according to plan, Mechanicsburg could unveil its first official skate park by Labor Day. Progress is zooming forward on a skate spot at Koser Park, located in the southern portion of the borough. People have been requesting a place to skate in the borough for about two decades, Borough Manager Layne Thompson said. “We have a lot of fans and a lot of skaters, but no place to do it,” he said.
