JOHNS ISLAND — As the island continues to grow, the city of Charleston is shifting its focus to catch up on much-needed infrastructure to accommodate more residents. Charleston Mayor William Cogswell acknowledged that some parts of the city are "struggling to keep up" with the explosive growth Charleston has experienced in the past two decades in his State of the City address at an April 8 City Council meeting, where he also noted successes in his first year of office.

Despite months of tension between Charleston County and the Charleston Animal Society, the two will be continuing their partnership. Charleston County held a contract with the nonprofit to provide shelter space since 1979 because the county doesn't run its own shelter, according to animal society CEO Joe Elmore.

JAMES ISLAND — The town is ending a cost-sharing agreement with the James Island Public Service District to instead pay for the construction of a new arts center. Residents will soon have a higher tax bill as a result. The town entered a cost-sharing agreement with the service district in 2019.

When the clock hits noon each day, Sylvalyn Hammond often faces a choice: take a lunch break or use the extra time to take care of another animal checked in at All Creatures Veterinary Clinic in downtown Charleston. Hammond said she’s typically booked days, if not weeks, in advance. The packed schedule not only makes it difficult to squeeze in emergency patients or a quick meal, but Hammond also finds herself struggling to balance her staff’s schedule and their mental health.

JOHNS ISLAND — In a win for bicyclists and pedestrians, Charleston County has found a way to grant them safe passage over the Stono River. After taking out plans for a bike and pedestrian bridge adjacent to the Limehouse Bridge as part of the Main Road project, county staff and the state Department of Transportation came up with a compromise to widen the Limehouse Bridge to include a 9-to-10-foot multiuse path.
