On April 1, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker broke the record for the longest speech on the Senate floor, clocking in at 25 hours and five minutes of non-stop advocating for Americans. The record was previously held by Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina for his 1957 attempt to block the Civil Rights Act. His attempt was unsuccessful. Booker was not allowed to sit, eat or leave to use the restroom during the duration of the speech, and he obviously didn’t sleep for this 25-hour period as well.

The United States Catholic Council of Bishops (USCCB) released a statement on immigration last month that sheds a Catholic social teaching perspective on the controversial issue. Catholic social teaching consists of moral, just and ethical principles that should be practiced by all Catholics, and shed some important light on the societal issues of our time. Some overarching themes of Catholic social teaching include caring for the self, others and all of God’s creation.

While sitting in class recently, a professor asked, “How many of you are registered to vote?”In our class of 30 or so students, only a handful of students raised their hands. I was shocked. Could they just have been procrastinating on filling out the form to register to vote? Or was this sign of a larger issue? Are college students apathetic to the political situation in America?
