Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Education announced that it plans to crack down on financial aid fraud for the fall 2025 semester with a new process. Once finalized, everyone who fills out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid will go through an “additional screening process” to help federal officials identify possible identity fraud, according to the Federal Student Aid office. The crackdown comes after fraud rings became a growing concern since the coronavirus pandemic.
