SONOMA COUNTY, CA — The Sonoma County Fair Board has canceled horse racing at this year's fair, set for Aug. 1-10 at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa. The difficult decision was announced Thursday. It was discussed at length and follows the cancellation of live horse racing in the Northern Circuit of California. The closure of Golden Gate Fields and the elimination of stabling at the Alameda County Fairgrounds led to a declining horse population in Northern California.

Victim Injured In Attempted Robbery, Walnut Creek Police Say

WALNUT CREEK, CA —One person was injured in an attempted robbery this week and police were working to track down the people responsible. The robbery was reported at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday in the 3300 block of Arbolado Drive. The victim told police that two suspects tried to rob him, assaulting him in the process. Police believe it was a crime of opportunity. The victim did not know the suspects. He told police he did not see any weapons and none were mentioned during the assault.
Petaluma Butter & Egg Days Parade: Road Closures, Alcohol Regulations

PETALUMA, CA —Several thousand people are expected to attend the annual Butter and Eggs Day Parade set for Saturday in downtown Petaluma. The family-oriented event starts at noon at Fourth and D streets. The weather should be sunny side up, with a high of 71 forecast by the National Weather Service. For safety reasons, police will close some roads at 5 a.m. To alleviate traffic congestion, the Petaluma Police Department encourages parade-goers to arrive early and carpool or use public transit.

ALAMEDA, CA—An Alameda resident recently became the top Girl Scout among 40,000 members across 19 counties in Northern California, from Santa Clara to the Oregon border. The appointment of Mary-Jane Strom as chief executive officer of the Girl Scouts of Northern California was announced April 10 by the Board of Directors and was effective immediately.
