Texas Tech football is heading to the Independence Bowl to finish their season. A bowl bid at 6-6 in a lower-tier bowl like the Independence Bowl might not be a desired destination but it is the one for Joey McGuire and his team in his second season. This marks the third time in program history the Red Raiders have played in this bowl. This time they will face a different opponent than their first two trips.

Texas Tech ended their season 6-6, which for most could be considered disappointing. With several returning starters and a head coach with more fire than his predecessors, expectations were high. The Red Raiders dealt with numerous injuries and were 1-3 then 3-5. However, Joey McGuire rallied his team to finish with a bowl bid. The Independence Bowl might not be an eye-popping game, but Tech has a chance to finish the year with a postseason victory. That is what every school wants.

Texas Tech football just wrapped up their 2023 season this past Friday. While the rivalry against Texas as Big 12 foes might have ended on a low note in a 57-7 blowout, Tech finished the season on a high note thanks to a strong November. The Red Raiders are heading to a bowl game for the third consecutive year, the first time that has happened since the Mike Leach era. How Joey McGuire has weathered this season’s storm of a poor start and bad injuries cannot be understated.
