In the last two years, Delhi has got five new public spaces — all along the floodplains of the Yamuna. These include redeveloped ghats, public parks, cafes and walking trails. As part of the Delhi Development Authority’s plans to redevelop the 22-km stretch between the Wazirabad Barrage and the Okhla Barrage, at least six more public spaces are expected to come up in the next two to three years, sources said. The total area under redevelopment in this stretch is 1,660 hectares.

DELHI WILL get its long-awaited Yamuna riverfront at the site of the erstwhile Millennium Park Bus Depot near Sarai Kale Khan. A central piazza, a topiary park, a local shopping centre along the lines of that in the Sunder Nursery, along with two parking areas and a river promenade will come up over an area of 25 hectares, sources said.

The report, which looks at the data from over 40,000 air quality monitoring stations across 138 countries, territories, and regions, and was analysed by IQAir’s air quality scientists, says Mayaguez in Puerto Rico was the cleanest metropolitan area of 2024, with an annual average PM2.5 concentration of 1.1 μg/m3. In terms of regional air quality, Oceania emerged as the cleanest area with 57 per cent of cities meeting the WHO guideline.

India is the fifth most polluted country in the world, with an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 50.6 μg/m3 – 10 times higher than the World Health Organization’s (WHO) annual PM2.5 guideline value of 5 μg/m3. In 2023, it was the third most polluted country. “Air pollution remains a significant health burden in India, reducing life expectancy by an estimated 5.2 years,” it said.
