    A pair of casting directors who live in Nanaimo will head down to Los Angeles next month to attend the 76th Emmy Awards, where they're up for an Emmy. According to a release from the Television Academy, Maureen Webb and Colleen Bolton found themselves on the Emmy Awards nomination list, alongside team members Laura Schiff, Carrie Audino and Kei Kawamura, and were all nominated for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series for FX productions’ historical drama and Japanese period series, Shōgun.

    Despite Nanaimo seeing a reduced dragonboat celebration this year at Maffeo Sutton Park, Crimson Coast Dance Society’s annual ‘dance in the belly of the dragon’ festival is going full steam ahead. Crimson Coast and the dragonboat festival have been partners for more than 10 years, celebrated over the same weekend and uniting different cultures through dance.

    A Nanaimo writer has penned his first book loosely based on a handful of incidents he and his family encountered while on vacation in Mexico. Author Gary Trew, who has adopted the pseudonym Denny Darke for The Man with the Pink Sombrero, said that while the story was written on location and shares parallels with real life, is still very much a work of dark humour and crime fiction.

    A B.C.-born violinist is honoured to have played for royalty. Tetsuumi Nagata of Nanaimo was selected to be one of 34 members from leading orchestras in the U.K. and Canada to perform in the Coronation Orchestra for the crowning of King Charles III and Queen Camilla on May 6, 2023, at Westminster Abbey. For his part in the coronation, Nagata received a King Charles III Coronation Medal this spring.

    Snuneymuxw First Nation’s chief noted that while this week’s repatriation of sacred objects was a step toward reconciliation, there is still a long way to go. A ceremony was held Thursday, May 23, to repatriate several sacred objects to SFN from the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria. A speaker at the event, Darren Good, said that when an object was used, the sweat and thoughts of the person who made it went into it, making it sacred as if an extension of the maker’s body.
