Fifty single-room modular homes are opening soon to people experiencing homelessness in Nanaimo as they transition from the shelter system. Connective, which is operating the site at at 1300 Island Highway South in Chase River, announced Friday, May 9, that the units are for people who have been staying in overnight shelters and are ready for more independence.

The Native Bee Society of B.C. has received such high interest for an upcoming workshop on bee biology and identification in Nanaimo, the organization is considering holding an additional event. A two-day Mini-Bee School Nanaimo has been set for Saturday and Sunday, May 10-11. Bonnie Zand, the course instructor, said that in recent weeks organizers had to expand the number of seats, then add a wait-list to accommodate the influx of interested locals.

After multiple delegations, a rally and petition, Nanaimo city council has voted to re-consider the previously passed $10.8-million boathouse design for Loudon Park. Council members, in a 6-3 vote on Monday, May 6, voted to move back on the process before they decide on boathouse options for the park on Long Lake. The $10.8-million design was previously passed in a 5-4 vote by council on April 7, forgoing a scaled-down design that would have cost $6.5 million.

Global Village Nanaimo has opened up a spring pop-up shop that will be open all month, with new fair-trade products including baskets from Ghana, aprons from Turkey and more. The pop-up store is open until May 29 at Country Club Centre. Global Village Nanaimo is a non-profit, now entering 28 years in the community, which opens a volunteer-run fair trade store twice a year, bringing affordable products from around the world to Nanaimo.
