The Buckeyes must replace starting strong safety Lathan Ransom and starting nickel back Jordan Hancock from last year’s team, though the situation is more complicated than simply filling two open positions. A season ago, Ohio State fielded their best trio of safeties in school history. With Ransom, Hancock, and free safety Caleb Downs, the Buckeyes had all of their bases covered, but only because those three players could do whatever was needed.

One year ago at this time, new Ohio State offensive line coach Tyler Bowen was in the middle of spring football at Virginia Tech as the Hokies’ quarterback coach trying to get his room ready for the 2024 season. It is safe to say that being the Buckeyes’ offensive line coach was not on Bowen’s radar. When the job came open following the 2024 season, however, that obviously changed. Bowen was announced as Ohio State’s new offensive line coach about one month ago.

Ohio State has spent a lot of time building a relationship with four-star Delaware (Ohio) Hayes running back Favour Akih in recent months. That culminated with a scholarship offer on Monday as Akih attended the Buckeyes’ first spring practice. “It was great being down for practice,” Akih told Buckeye Huddle. “Just getting a chance to speak with coach Day and coach Lock was a blessing itself. Congratulations to 1995 Heisman Trophy and Ohio State legend Eddie George on being named the new head football coach at Bowling Green State University. George was the head coach at Tennessee State, and his 2024 team went 9-4, and won a Big South-OVC Football Association Championship.

Ohio State has finally announced the additions of defensive coordinator Matt Patricia and offensive line coach Tyler Bowen, as well as promotions for five current assistants. Patricia has spent the bulk of his career in the NFL, winning two Super Bowls as the defensive coordinator in his tenure with the New England Patriots.

Ohio State has worked hard in recent months to make up ground in the chase for five-star Nixa (Mo.) offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell. That work paid off with the Buckeyes getting the 6-foot-8, 305-pound prospect on campus for the very first time in mid-December. Since then, the Buckeyes have underwent some staff changes, most notably for Cantwell the departure of offensive line coach Justin Frye to the NFL, with former Virginia Tech staffer Tyler Bowen replacing Frye.

The Buckeyes are losing senior defensive tackles Tyleik Williams and Ty Hamilton to the NFL, which is one of the reasons defensive line coach Larry Johnson went out and signed a trio of defensive tackles in Ohio State’s 2025 recruiting class. One of those three is Jarquez Carter, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound prospect out of Newberry High School in Newberry, Florida. Carter was ranked the No. 84 prospect in the class and the No. 5 defensive tackle nationally.
